COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M senior Shaina Burns improved her career best in the pentathlon by a single digit, scoring 4,006 points to win the event during the first day of the Charlie Thomas Invitational at Gilliam Indoor Stadium.
Action in the Charlie Thomas Invitational continues on Saturday with finals starting at 2 p.m. following a senior recognition at 1:20 p.m.
The Aggie tandem of Brandt Preston and Jacob Perry finished 1-2 in the men's 5,000m while Ashley Driscoll and Kelsie Warren placed second and fourth in the women's 5,000m.
Brandt posted a time of 14:33.98, moving to No. 11 on the Aggie all-time list, with Perry clocking 14:43.07. Driscoll registered a time of 16:56.96 in moving to No. 12 on the Texas A&M all-time list while Warren ran 17:20.45 in her first indoor race of the season.
Burns remains No. 4 performer on the Aggie all-time list and now has the No. 10 and No. 11 performances. The score by Burns also ranks 10th on the current 2018 collegiate list just behind the 4,009 by teammate Tyra Gittens. Texas A&M is the lone school to currently have two athletes among the top 10 in the pentathlon.
The three finishers behind Burns all set personal best scores. Cincinnati's Naomi Urbano scored 3,830 as runner-up, UTSA's Gabby Torres finished third with 3,692 and Zinedine Russell of Rice placed fourth at 3,336.
Three event PRs by Burns contributed to her overall career best score. A time of 8.95 in the 60m hurdles scored 920 points while a clearance of 5-8 ½ produced 903 points in the high jump. Leading the field in the shot put, Burns hit a mark of 46-1 ¼ for 797 points. In the long jump she added 651 points with a leap of 17-6.
Needing a time of at least 2:26.8 in the 800m to break her previous best of 4,005 points, Burns stopped the clock at 2:26.71 to pick up 735 points and finish with 4,006 points.
Through the first day of the heptathlon Nathan Hite is in fourth place with a score of 3,224 points while Landon Malouf is in ninth place with 2,811. Devon Williams leads the field with 3,319 points while Scott Filip of Rice (3,288) and Cincinnati's Alex Bloom (3,258) round out the top three.
Hite's performances among the first four events included a 7.06 in the 60m (861 points), 23-3 ¼ (835) in the long jump, 47-2 ¼ (752) in the shot put and 6-5 ½ (776) in the high jump. The second day events include the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m.
Other Aggies running in the 5,000m races included the trio of Olivia Arriaza (17:28.83), Devin Norton (17:35.59) and Kelsey Persyn (17:52.63) finishing 6-7-8. In the men's race the tandem of Zephyr Seagraves (15:03.22) and Sam Erickson (15:05.28) placed seventh and eighth.
