COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M Aggies Kaylor Chafin and Cason Sherrod were named two of 30 NCAA baseball student-athletes to be named a Senior CLASS award candidate, which is given to student-athletes that excel both on and off the field, it was announced Thursday.
Â
Texas A&M was the only school to have multiple players named to the list.
Â
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Â
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Â
The duo was drafted in the 2017 MLB Draft and elected to return for their senior campaigns. Chafin was picked by the New York Mets in the 32nd round and Sherrod was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 13th round.
Â
Chafin received his bachelor's degree in business last May and was a member of the 2016 SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Â
In 2018, Chafin has appeared in 10 games out of the bullpen, notching a 1-0 record with one save and a 2.77 ERA. The southpaw has 16 strikeouts in 13.0 innings.
Â
Last season, Chafin was 7-2 with three saves and a 2.33 ERA, tallying 72 strikeouts and a .204 opponent batting average in 77.1 innings. He pitched in all seven of Texas A&M's NCAA Championship games in 2017, recording three saves as the Maroon & White mad their sixth College World Series appearance.
Â
This year, Sherrod has pitched in eight games out of the bullpen, logging a 1-1 record with a 4.24 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 17.0 innings.
Â
In 2017, Sherrod logged a 4-1 record with four saves, a 2.89 ERA and a .203 opponent batting average. He worked four games in the NCAA Championship, picking up one save and logging a 1.93 ERA in 4.2 innings.
Â
Both honorees are deeply entrenched in community service activities with the Aggies and individually.
Â
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 College World Series® in June.
