Madalaine Stulce wins javelin at UTSA Roadrunner Invitational

SAN ANTONIO – Texas A&M's Madalaine Stulce claimed the women's javelin as the Aggies produced a runner-up finish along with a pair of third-place performances during a trio of throwing events that were featured during Friday's portion of the UTSA Roadrunner Invitational.

The team scored Roadrunner Invitational continues on Saturday with field events starting at 11 a.m. and track events beginning at 2 p.m. Admission to the meet is free.
 
Texas A&M women scored 33 points while the Aggie men picked up 14 points during Friday's action. Kansas State currently leads the team scoring as the Wildcat women have 52 points and the men scored 47 through four events.
 
A winning throw of 172-1 (52.46) secured the javelin victory for Stulce as she topped the field by 19-plus feet. Runner-up was Baylor's Megan SaxvanderWeyden at 152-10 (46.59). Aggie heptathlete Shaina Burns placed fourth with a mark of 129-8 (39.52), which was just two inches shy of her career best in the event.
 
"Not focusing on the competition is what got me through this meet," noted Stulce, who has a career best of 181-5 (55.31) from last year's SEC Championships. "I focused on my goals for this meet and I know I have a lot more in the tank that I can go to this year. I'm just building with each meet.
 
"I could feel my run better today and I was focusing on every step of the run during my approach. I gained some more consistency today heading into Texas Relays next week. I'm not exactly where I want to be right now, so that gives me more motivation to keep working harder for the rest of the season."
 
Celine Markert improved her outdoor personal best in the shot put to 50-2 ¾ (15.31) to place second. She finished behind a 52-8 ¼ (16.06) from Jess St. John of Kansas State. It's the second consecutive week for Markert to improve her outdoor shot put mark as she holds the No. 6 position on the Aggie all-time list. Markert has a career best of 50-7 ½ (15.43) from the 2017 indoor season.
 
Carissa van Beek placed third in the hammer with a mark of 186-2 (56.74) as teammate Markert finished fifth at 170-5 (51.95). Markert, who produced her second career best effort in this event, moves to No. 7 on the Aggie all-time list.
 
Kansas State finished 1-2 in the hammer with Janee Kassanavoid winning with a meet and facility record of 216-4 (65.93) and Helene Ingvaldsen finishing as runner-up at 205-2 (62.54).  
 
A third-place finish in the men's hammer came from a throw of 196-3 (59.82) by Austin Cook. The effort in the last round moved Cook ahead of TCU's Ryan Camp by two inches to lock up third place points.
 
Kansas State's Mitch Dixon claimed the hammer win with a 210-9 (64.23) effort as TCU's Fellan McGuigan finished second at 209-6 (63.85).
 
In the shot put Gabe Oladipo finished fifth with a toss of 56-8 ¾ (17.29). Aggie alum Lindon Victor also contested the shot put, producing a mark of 51-9 ¾ (15.79). Victor is preparing for the decathlon at the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Australia this April.
 
Nathan Hite, preparing for the Texas Relays decathlon next week, finished fifth in the javelin with a best of 184-4 (56.20) as he took only three attempts in the event.
