BIRMINGHAM – Two Aggies were selected for weekly SEC honors in track and field as Ilolo Izu shared the men's Runner of the Week award while Tyra Gittens was chosen as the women's Freshman of the Week based on their performances at the UTSA Roadrunner Invitational.
Racing in the 400m hurdles for the first time this outdoor season Izu produced a career best time of 50.42 seconds and moved to No. 12 on the Aggie all-time list. As the third fastest American in the event this early into the outdoor season, Izu also leads the Division I collegiate list. His previous best in the event was a 51.11 from the 2017 SEC Championships.
Sharing the men's Runner of the Week honor with Izu was Kenzo Cotton of Arkansas, who posted a wind-aided time of 10.12 in winning the 100m at the Arkansas Spring Invitational and also ran anchor legs on the Razorback's winning 4x100 (39.31) and 4x400 relays (3:10.30).
Gittens produced a mark of 20-3 ½ (6.18) in winning the long jump at UTSA, becoming the top freshman in the event during this outdoor season. She currently ranks fourth in the SEC and ninth among collegians overall. Gittens also finished fourth in the 100m hurdles with a career best time of 13.77, topping her previous best of 13.81.
Texas A&M will compete in the 91st Texas Relays this week, with action starting on Wednesday and continuing through Saturday.
