Texas A&M's Macarena Olivares Named SEC Tennis Player of the Week

COLLEGE STATION, Texas –Texas A&M senior Macarena Olivares has been named the SEC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the Southeastern Conference office announced today. It is the first time the Santiago, Chile, native has received the honor.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas –Texas A&M senior Macarena Olivares has been named the SEC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the Southeastern Conference office announced today. It is the first time the Santiago, Chile, native has received the honor.
 
Olivares, who transferred to A&M as a junior after twice earning JUCO All-American honors in both singles and doubles at ASA College, posted the third ranked singles win of Aggie career, defeating 90th-ranked Sabina Machalova of 10th-ranked Ole Miss, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 at the No. 2 line on Sunday. With the victory, Olivares extended her singles win streak to a team-leading four matches, including two wins against ranked opponents. She also improved her overall singles record to a team-leading 25-9 and her dual record to a team-best 15-4. In addition, Olivares moved into the team lead for SEC wins, improving to 5-3, all at the No. 2 line.
 
Prior to the singles match against Machalova, Olivares and partner Dorthea Faa-Hviding clinched the doubles point for the Aggies against the Rebels, winning the last match standing.
 
Overall, Olivares went a combined 3-0 in singles and doubles for the week. She began by recording a straight-set singles victory against Janina Braun of Mississippi State to help Texas A&M get its second Top-25 victory of the season with a 4-1 win over the 25th-ranked Bulldogs.
 
Olivares and the Aggies (15-5, 5-4 SEC) hit the road for their final four matches of the regular season, playing at No. 2 Vanderbilt tomorrow, at No. 20 Kentucky on Saturday, at No. 15 Auburn on Friday, April 13 and at Alabama on Sunday, April 15. The SEC Tournament is April 18-22 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
