Texas A&M Men's Golf
Aggie Invitational Opening Day in the Books
RESULTS/LIVE SCORING l AGGIE INVITE HISTORY
BRYAN, Texas – During a day that featured unseasonably cool temperatures as well as damp conditions, Texas A&M hosted the opening day of the 2018 Aggie Invitational at Traditions Club. Darkness prematurely halted the tournament's second round with the A&M men's golf team holding fourth place on the team leaderboard while freshman Walker Lee stood atop the individual standings.
The final day of the event will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday morning with the resumption of the second round before a final 18 holes of competition.
"The conditions were really tough today," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "It was 80 degrees yesterday and will be 80 degrees when everybody leaves but we just got a cold front that blew through and we've got to deal with it. I was disappointed because I thought our guys would handle it better. Three of the guys [in the lineup] played pretty well and obviously Walker played great as an individual, but to win in this kind of field and beat these kinds of teams you've got to have your full arsenal. I expect our guys to rebound and give us a good round tomorrow."
Lee (68-70=138, -6), who is competing as an individual, carded 10 birdies on the day and opened with the tournament low round of 68 before finishing 36 holes at six-under par, four strokes ahead of Ian Holt of Kent State (-2).
Texas A&M's lineup featured a trio of players in the top 15 of the player standings when play was discontinued. Junior All-American Chandler Phillips (-1) stands in third place with a final hole remaining during his second round, while sophomore Brandon Smith (75-70=145 (+1) is tied for fifth and senior Andrew Paysse (72-76=148, +4) maintains a share of 15th.
Sophomore Dan Erickson (82-81=163, +19) is tied for 68th while classmate Josh Gliege saw his opening round disqualified before shooting a 76 in the afternoon.
Also competing apart from the A&M lineup were Kavan Eubank (79-72=151, +7 – T-27th), Reese Ramsey (77-77=154, +10, T-44th), Max Miller (80-85=165, +21, T-74th).
Alabama (+7) leads the 14-team field, while Kent State (+15), Oklahoma State (+16), A&M (+18) and LSU (+19) round out the top five schools on the leaderboard.
