COLLEGE STATION, Texas—In support of national Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in April, Texas A&M men's tennis, softball, and baseball teams are again partnering with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to each host a "Step In Stand Up" game to raise awareness about sexual violence.
The annual participation in the university-wide "Step In Stand Up" campaign underscores Texas A&M Athletics' commitment to eliminate these crimes that are an issue on college campuses nationwide. The campaign encourages students, faculty and staff to step in and help prevent acts of sexual violence, while standing up for survivors. Each of the teams participating in the contest will wear teal accents, as teal is the designated color for Sexual Assault Awareness.
Men's tennis will take part in the "Step In Stand Up" match against Mississippi State April 13 at 6p.m., softball will don teal for its game on April 14 at 2 p.m. against Kentucky and baseball will play its "Step In Stand Up" game on April 17, a 6:30 p.m. contest against Texas State. Men's tennis will wear teal wrist bands and shoe laces, softball will be wearing teal visors and shoe laces and the baseball team will be wearing special teal accents to their uniforms for the event.
Student-athletes and advocates will collect donations for the Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC) of Brazos Valley at the respective games. Teal promotional giveaways are scheduled at men's tennis, softball and baseball provided by the Step In Stand Up campaign. Educational materials will be provided at each venue by SARC and the Office of CLEAR (Consensual Language, Education, Awareness, and Relationships).
Additionally, the baseball and softball games will feature an activist for sexual assault prevention throwing out the first pitch as the Aggies gather by the pitchers' mounds to show their support. The playing field at each venue will be adorned with special markings to distinguish the event.
As of April 2, Texas A&M University went teal on all their social media channels in honor of SAAM and to raise awareness of the Step In Stand Up campaign. The Twitter avatar for men's tennis, softball and baseball will change to teal on game day.
Texas A&M launched the Step In Stand Up campaign in 2015 with the mission of stepping in to prevent incidents of sexual violence and standing up for survivors. A web-based portal with information and resources is available at http://stepinstandup.tamu.edu. The campaign was selected as the NASPA Excellence Awards' 2016-2017 Bronze Award Winner for the Violence Education and Prevention, Crisis Management, Campus Security and related category.
