STILLWATER, Okla.- Texas A&M's Maddie Szeryk had four birdies while carding a 1-over 73 in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Women's Golf Championship at Karsten Creek. Szeryk, who is tied for 19th, is only two strokes out of the top 10 and three strokes out of the top five.
Szeryk's day started with a birdie on the 362-yard, par 4 10th hole, helping her shoot a 2-under 34 on the back nine at Karsten Creek, picking up birdies on No. 14 and No. 18. The two-time All-American bounced back from a bogey on No. 1 and a double-bogey on No. 2 to birdie the 137-yard par 3 7th.
Szeryk is looking to finish in the top 20 of the NCAA Championship for the second consecutive year, after tying for 13th in Sugar Grove, Ill. in 2017.
Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho tied a Karsten Creek course record with a 7-under 65 to lead the 72-hole tournament after a round. After three rounds, only the top 15 teams and the top nine individuals not on those teams advance to the final round. Szeryk would currently be in a three-player playoff for the last two of the nine individual spots.
