COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M Aggies added Ásdís Karen Halldórsdóttir, an Icelandic striker, for the 2018 season, head coach G Guerrieri announced Thursday.
"We're all excited to have Ásdís in the Aggie Soccer family," Guerrieri said. "She is a well-polished, smart, international-level striker. She comes from a very good family and has a strong academic background, so I'm confident she will fit in well with our high academic and athletic standards at Texas A&M."
The Reykjavik native has participated in international competitions for the Icelandic women's national teams since 2016. Her international tournaments include the UEFA U19 Championships in 2017 and 2018 and the UEFA U17 Championship in 2016. Halldórsdóttir has 13 caps for Icelandic squads, tallying three goals, all at the 2017 UEFA U19 Championship.
Halldórsdóttir currently plays in Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the highest level of women's soccer in Iceland. She leads her club Valur Reykjavik in scoring with four goals through three matches. She logged a hat trick in her first league match with Valur. From 2015-17, Halldórsdóttir played for KR Reykjavik, logging 45 matches, including 18 each in 2016 and '17.
"Ásdís is very skillful and smooth on the ball and has a European footballer's brain," Guerrieri said. "She's a proven goal scorer at the highest levels and I know she will fit in well with our style of play in Aggieland. I'm looking forward to the added dimensions she will bring to our team's already dangerous attack. She will enhance the strengths of her new teammates and make them more dangerous in combination. It's going to be fun to see."
The Aggies will embark on the 2018 campaign with players who have participated on national teams for Iceland, Mexico and the United States.
Texas A&M begins the season on Aug. 17 when they travel to Honolulu for a match against the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine.
