Aggie Baseball Announces Team Award Winners

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M Baseball announced their annual list of team honors Friday after the Aggies concluded the 2018 campaign with a 40-22 record, extending their school-record string of consecutive NCAA Championship appearances to 12 seasons.

MARION PUGH MOST VALUABLE PLAYER – Michael Helman

Junior Michael Helman earned the Marion Pugh Most Valuable Player Award. He was the only Aggie to start all 62 games. On the year, he batted .369 with 61 runs, 92 hits, 17 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 36 RBI and 12 stolen bases. Helman logged a .526 slugging percentage and .451 on-base percentage. He led the Aggies in batting average, runs, hits, doubles, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and stolen bases. He leads the SEC in batting average and hits, ranks second in on-base percentage and third in runs scored.
 
In SEC play, Helman batted .339 (40-for-118) with 27 runs, seven doubles, three home runs, 13 RBI and 10 stolen bases.
 
Helman earned All-SEC Second Team recognition and was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 11th round of June's MLB Draft.
 

C.E. "PAT" OLSEN OUTSTANDING PITCHER AWARD – Nolan Hoffman

Junior Nolan Hoffman was one of the nation's top relief pitchers and was selected by his teammates to receive the C.E. "Pat" Olsen Outstanding Pitcher Award.
 
Hoffman tied the Aggies' single-season saves record with 14 in 2018. He posted a 4-1 record with a 1.15 ERA, .238 opponent batting average and 53 strikeouts in 55.0 innings over his 33 relief appearances.
 
The Lincoln, Neb., native appeared in 16 games in league play, notching a 1-1 record, six saves and a 1.48 ERA. He logged 23 strikeouts in 24.1 innings.

Hoffman was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the fifth round of the MLB Draft.


WALLY MOON AWARD – Nolan Hoffman

The Wally Moon Award is given annually to the player who shows the most improvement from the fall to the end of the season. This year Hoffman was chosen by his teammates as the recipient of the honor.
 
After rough fall throwing over the top, Hoffman changed his slot to sidearm and became one of the premier closers in the nation.

 
MARION PUGH SPIRIT AWARD – Allonte Wingate

A consummate teammate, junior Allonte Wingate was recognized for his efforts by his teammates. They awarded him the Marion Pugh Spirit Award, which is given annually to the player who is most instrumental to team unity and who provides valuable leadership both on and off the field.

The squad's Swiss Army Knife, Wingate appeared in 58 games with 31 starts, including 17 in rightfield, 13 at third base and one in centerfield. He batted .304 (35-for-115) with 24 runs, two doubles, one triple, 11 RBI and two stolen bases.
 
In SEC action, Wingate played in 27 games, including 13 starts. He batted .265 (13-for-49) with nine runs, one triple, three RBI and one stolen base.

 
LORAINE B. AND WILLIAM B. "BREEZY" BREAZEALE RBI AWARD – Braden Shewmake

For the second consecutive season, Shewmake was the Aggies' best run-producer, earning the Loraine B. and William B. "Breezy" Breazeale RBI Award. The Wylie, Texas-native drove in 45 runs, bringing his career tally to 114.
 
Shewmake finished his sophomore season with a .327 batting average, 43 runs, eight doubles, four triples, five home runs, 45 RBI and 12 stolen bases.
