Texas A&M Men’s Basketball Earns NCAA Academic Excellence Award

INDIANAPOLIS – Texas A&M Men's Basketball scored in the top 10 percent of all NCAA men's basketball teams in the most recent Academic Progress Rates (APR) to earn a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA.

INDIANAPOLIS – Texas A&M Men's Basketball scored in the top 10 percent of all NCAA men's basketball teams in the most recent Academic Progress Rates (APR) to earn a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA.

"Being recognized for academic excellence with our APR is a credit to the hard work our players and academic support staff have put in the last few years," Texas A&M basketball head coach Billy Kennedy said.

Highlighting Texas A&M Basketball's commitment to academics, Tonny Trocha-Morelos and JC Hampton earned degrees over the weekend. Trocha-Morelos featured for the Aggies for four seasons before earning a degree in University Studies – Business. Hampton played one season for the Aggies as a graduate transfer and received his Master's in Recreation, Park & Tourism Services Friday morning.

The Aggies were one of three men's basketball teams from the state of Texas, joining Sam Houston State and Baylor, and one of four teams from the SEC, along with Auburn, Georgia and Kentucky, to earn the public recognition from the NCAA for the 2016-17 academic years.

For the first time ever, Texas A&M University had three varsity athletic programs earn Public Recognition Awards. In addition to men's basketball, softball and women's cross country, were amongst the top 10 percent of their respective sports in multi-year. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams.

"The Nye Academic Center is extremely proud to be a part of the men's basketball, softball and women's cross country teams receiving NCAA top 10 percent recognition," Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services Joe Fields said. "Our goal is to have each of our teams achieve this honor; we will continue to strive to achieve this goal."

The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.

The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.
