Cross Country earns NCAA Public Recognition Award for APR success

INDIANAPOLIS – Texas A&M's women's cross country scored in the top 10 percent of all NCAA women's cross country teams in the most recent Academic Progress Rates (APR) to earn a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA.

INDIANAPOLIS – Texas A&M's women's cross country scored in the top 10 percent of all NCAA women's cross country teams in the most recent Academic Progress Rates (APR) to earn a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA.

"We are always excited to see our athletes excel in the classroom and on the track or the cross country course," said Texas A&M assistant coach Wendel McRaven. "We have student-athletes that have their priorities in the right place. This public recognition just verifies that.

"We couldn't do it without the help we receive from the best academic support program in the nation and assistant athletic director Chris Barttelbort."

The Aggies were one of five women's cross country programs from the SEC to be recognized for the 2016-17 academic years, joining Auburn, Georgia, LSU and South Carolina.

Within the state of Texas, Texas A&M was one of nine programs to be honored. The others included Houston, Houston Baptist, Rice, Sam Houston, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas State, Texas Tech and UTRGV.

For the first time ever, Texas A&M University had three varsity athletic programs earn Public Recognition Awards. In addition men's basketball, softball, and women's cross country were amongst the top 10 percent of their respective sports in multi-year. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams.

"The Nye Academic Center is extremely proud to be a part of the men's basketball, softball and women's cross country teams receiving NCAA top 10 percent recognition," Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services Joe Fields said. "Our goal is to have each of our teams achieve this honor; we will continue to strive to achieve this goal."

The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.

The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.
