FORT WORTH – Members of the Texas A&M women's tennis team won four of six singles matches and one of three doubles matches during the second day of competition in the Big 5 Challenge at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
"Overall it was a very good day for us," A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "We once again got a ton of quality matches in, and I feel that we played at a level higher than yesterday. The singles matches were played outdoors, which allowed us to play out the points a bit more with the slower conditions. We moved indoors for the doubles, and the conditions were night and day. The indoors were extremely quick, and it was more about who was able to get their first serves in and who took control of the points early."
A&M freshmen Jessica Anzo and Jayci Goldsmith each improved to 2-0 in the singles tournament with Anzo defeating Lana Rush of Texas Tech, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 flight, and Goldsmith coming from behind to defeat the Red Raiders' Kennedy Bridgforth, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7, at the No. 4 flight.
A&M sophomores Dorthea Faa-Hviding and Riley McQuaid also picked up singles victories today as Faa-Hviding topped Nell Miller of Texas Tech, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 2 flight, and McQuaid knocked off Sydney Jones of Texas Tech, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 5.
Freshman Renee McBryde was unable to upset Texas Tech's 37th-ranked Felicity Maltby, falling 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 flight. Freshman Katya Townsend also suffered her first loss, falling to Francesca Sella of Texas Tech, 6-4, 6-7, 10-4, at the No. 6 flight.
Townsend and Anzo recorded the one win for the Aggies in doubles, defeating Jones and Sella, 6-0, at the No. 3 flight.
The Aggies return to the court Saturday for singles and doubles with time and opponents to be determined.
