FORT WORTH – In a day hampered by rain, members of the Texas A&M women's tennis team went 3-3 in singles and 0-2 in doubles against members of the Virginia Cavaliers women's team in Day 3 of the Big 5 Challenge at TCU's Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
"We definitely got some good indoor tennis experience in today," A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "The doubles didn't go quite the way we would have liked, but we no doubt learned and picked up on some things going forward that will help us the next time we play a good indoor team like the opponents we faced today. The big picture is we have now played three very tough days of tennis, and we will get another round of strong competition again tomorrow. The Aggies will leave Fort Worth better off for it."
Forced to move indoors, A&M sophomore Dorthea Faa-Hviding was first off after falling to Amber O'Dell of Virginia, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 singles flight. Aggie freshman Jessica Anzo improved to 3-0 at No. 3 and will play for the flight championship tomorrow after defeating the Cavaliers' Hunter Bleser, 6-3, 6-4. A&M sophomore Riley McQuaid followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Camille Favero at the No. 5 flight.
A&M freshman Renee McBryde, playing her second consecutive ranked opponent, suffered a 7-6 (4), 6-2 setback to 90th-ranked Meghan Kelley at the No. 1 flight , and A&M's Jayci Goldsmith fell for the first time in the fall season opening tournament as Virginia's Chloe Gullickson defeated the freshman, 7-6 (3), 6-1, at the No. 4 flight. Aggie freshman Katya Townsend then helped A&M finish .500 for the day in singles, coming from behind to defeat May Das, 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 at the No. 6 flight.
A&M went 0-2 against Virginia doubles teams. McBryde and Goldsmith fell to Kelley and Sofia Munera-Sanchez, 6-1, at the No. 1 flight, and Faa-Hviding and McQuaid suffered a 6-2 setback to O'Dell and Gullickson at the No. 2 flight.
The Aggies conclude the four-day tournament tomorrow.
