DALLAS – Texas A&M sophomores Tatiana Makarova and Iulia Ivascu went undefeated in both singles and doubles on the first day of the SMU Invitational at the SMU Tennis Complex, Turpin Stadium & Brookshire Family Pavilion.
"Well done today by both Tatiana and Iulia in the singles and the doubles today," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "It was a very good win by Tatiana in beating SMU's No. 1 player from last season, and well done by Iulia coming back from a set and 3-0 down. Tomorrow is another opportunity for them both to come out and compete hard once again."
Makarova and Ivascu opened the day by defeating Autumn Crossnoe and Allison Stewart of Abilene Christian, 6-1, in the first round of the No. 2 doubles draw. The Aggie pair advances to take on Damira Muminovic and Eva Chivu of Georgia State in the semifinals tomorrow.
In singles, both A&M players rebounded after losing the first set. Makarova, playing in the No. 1 singles draw, fought back to win, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, against Karina Traxler, who played No. 1 singles for SMU last spring. Makarova advances to face Janina Braun of Mississippi State in the semifinals on Saturday.
Ivascu defeated Damira Muminovic of Georgia State, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of the No. 3 singles draw. Ivascu will play Vivienne Kulicke of SMU in a semifinal match tomorrow.
Players are slated to play one singles match and one doubles match every day, with the tournament concluding Sunday with the championship matches for each draw.
