TULSA, Oklahoma –Texas A&M's Carlos Aguilar and Barnaby Smith advanced to the second round of the qualifying draw at the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Monday afternoon. Aggie men's tennis claimed nine wins through the first three days of competition in the Sooner State.
No. 84 Aguilar topped No. 109 Niclas Braun of Mississippi State in straight sets and faces off against No. 113 Jack Molloy of Cal in Tuesday's Round of 64. Smith bested Jaron Hung of Tulsa 7-6, 7-5 to advance to face No. 95 Joseph Gullin of UC Santa Barbara.
Kevin Lam, Guido Marson, Austin Abbrat, Jack Pulliam and Noah Schachter joined Aguilar and Smith in the win column with wins in the pre-qualifying consolation draw. Freshman Alex Vedri topped Paolo Cucalon of Temple in the pre-qualifying round of 256 before falling in the second round to Alex Reco of Arkansas.
Schachter and Smith topped Florian Broska and Trevor Foshey of Mississippi State in the qualifying doubles first round before falling to No. 44 Andy Andrade and Oliver Crawford of Florida. No. 40 Daniel Cukieman and Tanner Smith of Southern Cal ousted Marson and Valentin Vacherot in Monday's first round match.
The University of Tulsa is hosting the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship for the 13th straight season, with matches taking place on the courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Qualifying singles and doubles will be held October 1-2, with main draw matches transpiring October 4-8.
In addition to vying for the All-American national title, players will be competing to secure a berth into the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place November 7-11, in Surprise, Arizona. Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist, along with doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist advance to the end of fall national championship.
