ITA Texas Regional – Day 2
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M freshmen Katya Townsend and Jayci Goldsmith have advanced to the singles quarterfinals at the ITA Texas Regional Championships after each won two rounds of matches today at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
"Overall, we are pleased with the level that we are performing as a group," A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "There is obviously always room for improvement in all areas, but we are a team that is doing a whole lot of good things at the moment. Katya and Jayci are having an excellent tournament, and we are looking forward to seeing how they perform once again tomorrow."
Townsend will take on No. 1 seed and 21st-ranked Anna Turati of Texas in the quarterfinals, Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Townsend advanced by defeating Sydney Jones of Texas Tech, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 32 and topping Marina Miguel of Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 16.
Goldsmith, who held off Liza Buss of SMU, 6-2, 7-5, in the round of 32 and defeated Minying Liang of North Texas, 6-4, 6-3, will face Fernanda Labraña of Texas also at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
In doubles, the Aggie duo of Riley McQuaid and Iulia Ivascu defeated the Longhorn tandem of Labraña and Katie Poluta, 6-4, in the round of 16, but A&M was eliminated in the quarterfinals, falling to Victoria Smirnova and Anna Bowtell of Rice, 6-3.
Saturday action gets underway with the doubles semifinals at 9:30 a.m. Admission is free.
The doubles champion and the singles finalists earn an automatic invitation to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Arizona. The tournament, held from Nov. 7-11, features the champions from each of the 12 regions around the country, as well as several at-large bids.
