WACO, Texas – Kevin Lam and Barnaby Smith of Texas A&M men's tennis advanced to the ITA DI Texas Men's Regional Round of 32 after rain forced play inside the Hawkins Tennis Center on Baylor University's campus on Friday.
The Aggies are joined by players from Abilene Christian, Baylor, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Rice, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UT Arlington, UTSA and UTRGV. Play began Friday with the championship matches taking place on Monday.
Lam booked his ticket into the Round of 32 with wins over Sanshidh Kommaruju of UTA and Jackson Fine of Abilene Christian. A season ago, Lam claimed the singles consolation title with wins over players from SMU, UT Arlington, Lamar, SMU and Texas Tech. Lam will face off against No. 47 Harrison Scott of Texas on Saturday.
Smith earned his place in the Round of 32 after besting Matheus Ferreira Leite of Texas Tech, 6-0, 6-1 and will take on Jimmy Bendeck of Baylor in third round action.
Freshman Austin Abbrat, Guido Marson and Noah Schachter claimed wins in the Round of 128. Abbrat dispatched of Enrique Pardo of UTA before falling to No. 33 Johannes Schretter of Baylor. Schachter ousted Michael Benavida of ACU before getting tripped up by Artem Kapshuk of Texas Tech. Marson ousted Oliver Valentinsson of UIW before coming up short against Jacob Eskeland of Rice.
Pranav Kumar and Barnaby Smith have yet to hit the courts for the Maroon & White, their matches were scheduled to begin after 8:00 p.m., but the pace of play has them waiting in the wings.
Freshman Jack Pulliam dropped a tightly contested match to Gabriel Evans of UIW and will participate in the consolation draw that begins on Saturday. Alex Vedri will join Pulliam in the consolation draw after dropping his opening match to Chih Chi Huang of Texas.
The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country. In Division I, regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Ari.
