TULSA, Oklahoma –Texas A&M's Carlos Aguilar and Barnaby Smith stormed through the qualifying draw at the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Tuesday to advance to Thursday's main draw.
No. 84 Aguilar topped No. 113 Jack Molloy of Cal in three-sets followed by a win over No. 66 Antonio Cembelin of Indiana. The A&M sophomore picked up three-straight ranked wins in the Sooner State, improving to 32-8 for his career in the Maroon & White.
Smith bested No. 95 Joseph Gullin of UC Santa Barbara after dropping the first set before ousting No. 83 Loic Cloes of South Alabama in the final round of the qualifying draw. The High Wycombe, England native's two wins against ranked opponents on the day tripled his career total to three ranked wins as an Aggie.
The University of Tulsa is hosting the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship for the 13th straight season, with matches taking place on the courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Main draw matches begin Thursday and continue through next Monday.
In addition to vying for the All-American national title, players will be competing to secure a berth into the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place November 7-11, in Surprise, Arizona. Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist, along with doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist advance to the end of fall national championship.
