Match Preview: No. 18 Tennessee
Oct 20, 2018 | Soccer
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 5 Texas A&M hosts No. 18 Tennessee at Ellis Field for the Aggies' regular-season home finale. Both squads need a victory along with help from Kentucky to keep their SEC regular-season title hopes alive. Match time is 4:05 p.m. with the contest set to air on SEC Network.
With two games remaining on the league slate, Texas A&M and Tennessee are tied with Arkansas for third place with 16 points on identical 5-2-1 marks. The three teams all sit six points behind first-place Vanderbilt (22 points - 7-0-1). Each team will be eliminated from the championship chase with a loss, and a draw takes both squads out of the hunt. A tie or win by Vanderbilt against Kentucky on Sunday would also take Texas A&M and Tennessee out of the equation.
The SEC Network will televise the match with Trey Bender (play-by-play) and Jill Loyden (color) handling the call. The contest will be available for viewing on SEC Network+. SECNetwork+ provides events to SEC Network subscribers through WatchESPN and the ESPN app on smartphones, computers, tablets and connected devices (Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox 360 and Xbox One). The game will also air on 102.7 The Zone locally and RadioAggieland.com worldwide.
After suffering their first shutout in 32 matches on Thursday, the Aggies look to get the offense revved up again against Tennessee. Texas A&M ranks second in the nation with 44 goals on the season, trailing only Colorado (46). The Aggies are one of just eight teams to score 40 or more goals in 2018. The nearest SEC team is Auburn with 38 goals.
The Volunteers are the only team in the SEC against which the Aggies have a losing record. Tennessee owns a 4-1-0 edge in the all-time series. The Vols claimed a 2-0 victory over Texas A&M in the most recent meeting, a 2016 match in Knoxville. Hannah Wilkinson and Anna Bialczak each registered a goal and an assist for Tennessee. Texas A&M's lone win in the series came in 2014 when Shea Groom recorded a hat trick in a 3-0 victory at Ellis Field.
The Volunteers enter play with an 11-2-2 overall record and a 5-2-1 mark in league play. Despite playing in just eight matches because of World Cup qualifying with Jamaica, Bunny Shaw leads Tennessee with 18 points on eight goals and two assists. Danielle Marcano and M.A. Vignola have each added nine points on three goals and three assists. Shae Yanez has played 1,389 minutes in goal, logging a 0.52 goals-against average, eight shutouts and a .849 save percentage.
