WACO, Texas –Texas A&M men's tennis' Barnaby Smith advanced to the ITA DI Texas Men's Regional Round of 16 after besting Jimmy Bendeck of Baylor on Saturday at the Hurd Tennis Center.
The Aggies are joined by players from Abilene Christian, Baylor, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Rice, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UT Arlington, UTSA and UTRGV at the ITA Texas Regional. Play began Friday with the championship matches taking place on Monday.
Smith outlasted Bendeck in a three-setter to advance to the Round of 16 against No. 29 Yuya Ito of Texas on Sunday. Senior Kevin Lam saw his run in Waco come to an end, falling to No. 47 Harrison Scott of Texas.
Smith and freshman Noah Schachter moved on to the doubles round of 16 with an impressive 8-4 win over Clement Sarradin and Mateo Schmit of UTRGV. The Maroon & White duo will take on Ito and Colin Markes of Texas on Sunday.
In the consolation draw freshman Jack Pulliam and Alex Vedri are still alive, the pair advanced to the Round of 16 with wins against Jan-Simon Vrbsky of Rice and Cole Lawson of ACU, respectively.
The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country. In Division I, regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Ari.
