WACO, Texas – Texas A&M men's tennis freshman Alex Vedri won twice on Sunday to advance to the ITA DI Texas Men's Regional Consolation Semifinals at the Hurd Tennis Center. The semifinals and finals are scheduled to take place on Monday.
The Aggies are joined by players from Abilene Christian, Baylor, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Rice, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UT Arlington, UTSA and UTRGV at the ITA Texas Regional.
Vedri topped Joaquin Delgado of ACU and Kai Breitback of UTSA to advance to Monday's semifinal match. The A&M freshman faces off against Roberto Rosales of SMU for a place in the consolation finals. Rosales knocked off A&M Jack Pulliam in the quarterfinals, Pulliam bested Arthur Serafim of Lamar in the Round of 16 on Sunday.
Sophomore Barnaby Smith dropped a 6-2, 6-2 result to No. 29 Yuya Ito of Texas in the Main Draw Round of 16. Smith and A&M freshman Noah Schachter were knocked out of the doubles draw with a default against Ito and Colin Markes of Texas.
The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country. In Division I, regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Ari.
