Oct 21, 2018 | Women's Golf
AUSTIN, Texas- Texas A&M's Ava Schwienteck shot a 2-under 70 to lead the women's golf team in the final round of the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
Schwienteck finished 14th at 4-over par, her highest finish as an Aggie. She posted six birdies at the University of Texas Golf Club on Sunday, including playing the front nine of the course at 4-under par. Courtney Dow had an under-par effort on Sunday, turning in a 1-under 71 that included three birdies in a four hole span—two of which came from putts on the fringe. Dow climbed 13 spots on the leaderboard to finish 25th at 8-over par, her best finish of the season.
"I hit my driver really well and hit a lot of fairways," Schwienteck said. "On the front nine, I played really well, shooting four-under."
Texas A&M shot a 3-over 291, its best round at the par 72 / 6,491-yard course at Steiner Ranch that averaged 76.54 strokes per round over the 54-hole tournament. The Aggies finished eighth at 44-over in a tough field that included nine top-50 squads. Host No. 6 Texas won the event at 10-under par, and the Longhorn's Hailee Cooper took medalist honors at 9-under.
"We definitely had to come back from a tough round yesterday," head coach Andrea Gaston said. "Today it was great to see us get off to a great start on our first nine. I'm just really pleased with how Ava and Courtney stepped up, and how the team overall made a great effort to shoot a good round."
Amber Park carded a 5-over 77 to finish the tournament in the tie for 48th at 16-over. Brooke Tyree shot a 4-over 76, her best round of the tournament as she finished tied for 55th at 20-over. Katie Finley played the back nine of the course at 1-under, shooting a 2-over 74 to tie for 60th.
The Aggies are back in action for their final event of the fall season October 28-29 at the Jim West Challenge in San Marcos.
