Texas A&M’s Dow Tied For Third After First Day Of Jim West Classic
Oct 28, 2018 | Women's Golf
SAN MARCOS, Texas- Texas A&M's Courtney Dow had her best day of the fall season, shooting a 69-71 to sit 4-under par to lead the women's golf team in the opening 36 holes of the Jim West Classic.
Dow sits in a tie for third place, four strokes behind tournament leader Frida Kinhult of Florida State (-8). Dow had eight birdies on the par 72 / 6,185-yard course, and shot a season-best 69 in the first round.
"I played really steady today and did a good job giving myself a lot of birdie chances by sticking to my game plan," said Dow. "In the first round I was knocking it close so I had quite a few easy birdies. In the second round, I didn't hit it quite as close but my speed was good so I made a few good putts."
Chloe Velasco is tied for 12th after shooting 2-under in the first round, highlighted by a season-best 69 in the first round, one stroke off her career-best.
"We saw some exciting rounds today from our upperclassmen," head coach Andrea Gaston said. "It is nice to see them play the way we know they can."
"On a 36 hole day, our goal was to take it one hole at a time and have patience," Gaston added. "The girls showed fight plus heart today and all of them had moments to be proud of."
The Aggies are 11-over after the first day. TCU leads the tournament at 9-under par.
Brooke Tyree is tied for 50th after shooting 6-over 150 at Kissing Tree Golf Club. Amber Park is tied for 68th at 11-over 155, and Ava Schwienteck is 74th with a 14-over 168.
The Aggies return for the final round of the tournament on Monday, starting at 8:30 a.m. in a shotgun start. Live scoring is available at birdiefire.com and live updates can be found on Twitter at @aggiewomensgolf.
