No. 6 Men’s Golf Tees Off At Maridoe Intercollegiate
Oct 05, 2018 | Men's Golf
CARROLLTON, Texas- Fresh off of a team title at the Shoal Creek Invitational, No. 6 Texas A&M men's golf team heads to the Maridoe Intercollegiate, teeing off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
"We are really looking forward to this event," head coach JT Higgins said. "We have heard so much about Maridoe Golf Club, and it is a chance to play fairly close to home, drive to a tournament and compete against some in-state schools. Maridoe is a very difficult, demanding track and we always like to test ourselves against on a challenging course."
The 54-hole tournament features one round each day, concluding on Monday. The 14-team field takes to the par 70 / 7,043-yard Maridoe Golf Club, which was significantly renovated in 2017. In addition to Texas A&M, Arkansas State, Boise State, Coastal Carolina, Indiana, Rice, No. 24 SMU, Houston, New Mexico, North Florida, North Texas, No. 5 Tennessee, UT Arlington and UTSA complete the field.
The Aggies are coming off of a 9-shot victory Sept. 24-25 at Shoal Creek Country Club, the only team in that field to finish under par at 8-under. All five golfers finished 17th-or-better, led by freshman Sam Bennett, who tied for fourth in his first collegiate tournament.
Bennett is joined in the lineup by Brandon Smith, Dan Erickson, Reese Ramsey and Walker Lee, with Josh Gliege competing in the event as an individual. Smith leads the squad with a 70.50 stroke average after posting top-10 finishes in each of the first two events.
Erickson, who posted four top-five finishes in 2017-18, is coming off of a 17th-place finish in Birmingham, Alabama. Ramsey is in the lineup for the second straight tournament, fresh off a final-round 68 in the last event. Lee and Gliege return to competition for the first time since the season-opening OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational.
