DALLAS – Texas A&M sophomores Tatiana Makarova and Iulia Ivascu will play for the No. 2 doubles championship and Makarova will compete in the finals of the No. 1 singles draw on Sunday at the SMU Invitational after winning semifinal matches today at the SMU Tennis Complex, Turpin Stadium & Brookshire Family Pavilion.
"It was a very good and decisive win for Tatiana today" Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "Janina Braun played very high in the lineup last year for Mississippi State, which was a very solid team. It's a great opportunity tomorrow as they will play for the doubles title, as well as Tatiana will have an opportunity to play for the singles title."
In doubles, the Aggie pair defeated Damira Muminovic and Eva Chivu of Georgia State, 6-2, in the semifinals. A&M will face twin sisters Lidia and Claudia Yanes Garcia of Austin Peay in the No. 2 doubles championship match on Sunday at 9 a.m.
In singles, Makarova defeated Janina Braun of Mississippi State, 6-2, 6-1, in the semifinals today to advance to the championship match, where she will face Daniela Ramirez of Georgia State.
Ivascu suffered her first loss, falling to Vivienne Kulicke of SMU, 6-0, 7-5, in the No. 3 singles semifinals. Ivascu will face Claudia Yanes Garcia on Sunday for third place.
