TYLER, Texas – Texas A&M juniors Jace Sternberger and Trayveon Williams were named one of 12 semifinalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, presented annually to the top offensive player with ties to the state of Texas, it was announced Friday.
For the season, Sternberger has hauled in 38 passes for 644 yards and six touchdowns. He set the Texas A&M school record for most touchdowns by a tight end in a single season and is tied for the SEC and FBS lead among tight ends.
Sternberger's 644 receiving yards rank second nationally among tight ends and third all-time in school history for the highest single-season total by a tight end. The SEC's sixth-leading receiver has posted at least one 20-yard catch in nine of the Aggies' 10 games.
Williams leads the SEC in rushing with 1,159 yards and is second in the conference with 11 rushing touchdowns. One of the league's top receiving backs, he also tops the SEC with 1,431 all-purpose yards.
Williams became the fifth Aggie to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark twice in his career and currently ranks eighth on Texas A&M's single-season list.
Last week against Ole Miss, the Houston, Texas, native torched the Rebel defense to the tune of 228 yards on a career-high 31 carries. The effort was his sixth 100-yard game of the season and was the fourth 200-yard rushing game of his career, tying Darren Lewis (1987-90) for the school record. He joined Lewis as the only two Aggies to record two 200-yard games in a season.
In the season opener against Northwestern State, Williams ran roughshod through the defense for 240 yards and three touchdowns. The 240-yard outburst ranks as the No. 8 single-game effort in FBS and Williams is the only FBS player with 200-yard rushing games in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
For his career, Williams is the sixth Aggie to reach the 3,000-yard mark in career rushing yards and is tied for fifth all-time with 3,014 yards. Williams ranks seventh in program history in career all-purpose yardage at 3,834.
