Football Tops LSU in Record-Tying 7 OTs
Nov 25, 2018 | Football
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) -- Kellen Mond's 2-point conversion pass to Kendrick Rogers in the seventh overtime gave Texas A&M a 74-72 victory over No. 8 LSU on Saturday night in a game that tied the NCAA record for most overtimes in an FBS game.
Mond connected with Quartney Davis on a 17-yard throw to tie it at 72. Greedy Williams was called for pass interference on the first 2-point conversion try, giving the Aggies (8-4, 5-3, No. 22 CFP), another shot. After a false start by Texas A&M, Mond found Rogers for the conversion to end it.
Joe Burrow had a 10-yard TD run to put LSU (9-3, 5-3, No. 7 CFP) up 72-66 in the seventh OT, but his 2-point conversion throw failed.
The 74 points LSU allowed are the most ever given up by a ranked team, eclipsing the 73 No. 24 Fresno State gave up to Northern Illinois on Oct. 6, 1990.
The 146 combined points are the most in NCAA history in an overtime game involving a ranked team and the game was the first seven overtime game involving a ranked team.
Mond threw for 287 yards and six touchdowns, three 2-point conversions and ran for one more TD as Texas A&M snapped a seven-game skid against LSU and got its first win over the Tigers since 1995.
LSU coach Ed Orgeron's clothes might have already dried by the time this one ended after he was prematurely doused with Gatorade after the Tigers appeared to have a clinching interception in the fourth quarter. But the play was reviewed and it was ruled that Mond's knee was down before the throw, keeping the Aggies alive and setting up the wild finish.
Burrow threw for three touchdowns and ran for three more as the Tigers were denied their first 10-win regular season since 2012 and likely knocked out of contention for a New Year's Day bowl game.
Mond threw a 25-yard TD pass to Jace Sternberger and a 2-point conversion to Rogers in sextuple overtime before Burrow had a 4-yard touchdown run and Burrow ran for a 4-yard TD and threw for the 2-point conversion to push it to a seventh OT.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire took a pitch from Burrow and launched an 11-yard TD pass to Tory Carter to put the Tigers on top in the fifth overtime, but the 2-point conversion failed. Mond answered with a 6-yard throw to Rogers, but A&M's 2-point try failed, too to send it to the sixth OT.
Mond found Davis on a 19-yard touchdown pass on the last play of regulation to send it to OT.
Both teams kicked field goals in the fourth overtime to send it to the fifth.
Burrow threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Dee Anderson in triple overtime and Justin Jefferson grabbed the 2-point conversion. Rogers made it 49-49 and forced quadruple overtime when he grabbed a 25-yard TD pass and the 2-point conversion.
Both teams settled for field goals in the first overtime. Mond had a 3-yard touchdown run in double overtime and LSU sent it to triple OT when Nick Brossette followed with a 3-yard run, too.
ABOUT THE WIN
- With the 74-72 victory over No. 8 LSU, the Aggies move to 8-4 on the season and 5-3 in SEC play.
- This marked the 20th time in program history the Aggies have gone to overtime, and just the sixth time they have gone to multiple overtimes.
- The game went to seven overtimes, surpassing the program's previous high, set in the four-overtime game at Kansas State in 2011.
- The seven overtimes matched the most overtime periods played in both a SEC game and a FBS game. This is the fifth time a FBS game has gone to seven overtimes.
- The combined score of 146 points set a new FBS record for most points scored in a game.
- The last time the Aggies knocked off a top-10 team was Oct. 8, 2016 when A&M topped No. 9 Tennessee in overtime, 45-38, at Kyle Field.
ANOTHER CENTURY GAME FOR SEC'S LEADING RUSHER
The SEC's leading rusher lived up to his billing as junior RB Trayveon Williams rushed for 198 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries against LSU.
- Williams' previous career rushing high vs. LSU was 68 yards on 10 rushes from 2016. After one quarter, Williams had already rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown on 8 carries.
- On the Aggies' initial scoring drive (10 plays, 95 yards, 4:28 TOP), Williams had five rushes for 53 yards, including a 10-yard TD run to end the drive.
- After 37 career games, Williams has rushed for 3,379 yards. Tonight he moved into third place on the Aggies' career rushing list behind only Darren Lewis (5,012 yards, 1987-90) and Curtis Dickey (3,703, 1976-79). On the season, the junior has piled up 1,524 yards to rank third in a single season at A&M.
- Williams tallied his 14th and 15th rushing touchdowns of the season, which moved him to into a tie for No. 8 on the Aggies' season list. Williams' career rushing TDs improved to 31, which ranks No. 8 in school history.
NOTABLES
- Louisianimal Deshawn Capers-Smith, from New Orleans, La., and playing his final game at Kyle Field, had a tackle for loss to help fuel a first-quarter three-and-out by the Tigers. Capers-Smith finished with eight stops against the Tigers to go along with a pass breakup.
- 2018 Mackey Award semifinalist Jace Sternberger extended his own school record for touchdown catches by a tight end to 10 with a 10-yard grab in the second quarter and a 25-yard reception in the sixth overtime period. His 10 receiving TDs rank sixth on the overall season receiving TDs list. For the game, Sternberger had 75 yards on five catches and two touchdowns.
- 2018 Ray Guy Award finalist Braden Mann had another big day with a 53.2 average on five boots. Mann came into the game with a FBS-best 50.9 average and is on pace to break the NCAA and SEC season record of 50.28 by LSU's Chad Kessler in 1997. Mann had punts of 46, 52, 53, 56 and 59 yards of which just three were returned for -1 yards, with another resulting in a fumble recovery. He also contributed a special teams tackle on a kickoff.
- The Aggies' Wrecking Crew defense sacked LSU QB Joe Burrow six times, which was the most sacks allowed by LSU in 2018. Seniors Daylon Mack & Otaro Alaka, playing their final game at Kyle Field, led the way with a pair of sacks.
- Sophomore QB Kellen Mond led a touchdown scoring drive to even the score and send the game to overtime. The right-hander completed a TD pass with one second left on the clock to sophomore WR Quartney Davis. Mond finished the night with a career-high six touchdowns on 23-for-49 passing for 287 yards. The six passing TDs ties the second most by an Aggie in a single game in program history. Mond's 23 passing TDs in 2018 are tied for fifth most in a single season.
- Sophomore WR Kendrick Rogers had one catch for 22 yards in regulation. He came up big for the Aggies in overtime with two catches, both resulting in a touchdown, for 31 yards and a trio of two-point conversions.
- Senior DB Donovan Wilson surpassed the team's previous season high for tackles in a game that he set against No. 13 Kentucky earlier this season, finishing with 13 total tackles.
- A&M had three players record multiple receiving touchdowns in a game for the first time in program history; Sternberger, Davis & Rogers. The last time multiple players had more than one receiving TD in a game was Oct. 4, 2014 against Mississippi State (Speedy Noil & Josh Reynolds, two each).
LAST GAME AT KYLE FOR 16 SENIORS
- It was the final game at Kyle Field for 16 seniors: LB Otaro Alaka, DB Deshawn Capers-Smith, DE Landis Durham, OL Justin Dworaczyk, DL Landry Estes, RB Kwame Etwi, DS Austin Frey, LB Riley Garner, 12th Man/FB Cullen Gillaspia, DL Kingsley Keke, PK Daniel LaCamera, OL Connor Lanfear, DL Daylon Mack, OL Keaton Sutherland, DB Donovan Wilson and TE Trevor Wood.
- The Senior Class of 2018 has compiled a 31-20 overall record and is one of an elite group of seniors that have earned four bowl trips during their careers.
GAME CAPTAINS, 12thMAN
- Texas A&M's game captains for the LSU game were senior DT Daylon Mack, senior SAF Donovan Wilson, junior RB Trayveon Williams and junior C Erik McCoy. Texas A&M won the toss and deferred its choice to the second half.
- Senior RB Cullen Gillaspia was the Aggies' 12th Man for the 38th straight game. He is now one away from matching the school record of 39 consecutive starts by a 12th Man held by Sam Moeller from 2013-15.
