Nov 09, 2018 | Women's Tennis
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Texas A&M women's tennis captured six wins at UNLV Rebel Invite hosted at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas Friday afternoon. The Maroon & White were 4-1 in singles action and 2-1 in doubles play.
"Overall, it was a good start to the three day event," Texas A&M women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver said. "Our group competed hard for every point and good things happen when that is our mentality. Our level of play was solid for the first day, but I hope and anticipate that we will play at an even higher level tomorrow as we continue to adapt to the conditions here in Vegas."
Freshman Jayci Goldsmith outpaced Kalani Soli of Liberty 6-0, 7-5 followed by freshman Katya Townsend topping Ivana Babic of North Texas 6-4, 6-2. Rounding out the singles wins for the Aggies were sophomore Riley McQuaid over Elise Van Heuvele of Iowa, 6-1, 6-1, and sophomore Dorthea Faa-Hviding against Meredith Laskey of Air Force, 6-1, 6-4. Sophomore Tatiana Makarova suffered a 6-3, 6-3 setback against Kennedy Bridgforth of Texas Tech.
In doubles action, Goldsmith and Makarova stood tall against Emma Wilson and Camila Westrbooks of Arizona, 6-2 and Townsend and Jessica Anzo toppled Alex Kuo and Meredith Lasky of Air Force, 6-0. Faa-Hviding and McQuaid were tripped up, 6-2, by Seira Shimizu and Caitlin Perkins of Purdue.
Joining the Aggies in the impressive field are competitors from top national programs such as Air Force, Arizona, Iowa, Liberty, North Texas, Purdue, Texas Tech and UNLV. Featuring six flights of singles and three flights of doubles, all matches are free and open to the public.
