HANGZHOU, China --- Texas A&M will be represented by five current or former swimmers at the 14th FINA World Swimming Championships at the Hangzhou Olympic and International Expo Center Dec. 11-16.
Set to compete from Texas A&M's current rosters are freshman Kaloyan Bratanov representing Bulgaria from the men's team and senior McKenna DeBever representing Peru from the women's squad. Bratanov was the 50-meter freestyle champion at last summer's Speedo Junior National Championships, while DeBever currently holds eight Peruvian national records.
Also competing will be former Texas A&M standouts Bethany Galat and Lisa Bratton, who are representing Team USA. Galat and Bratton finished their collegiate eligibility in 2018 and combined to earn 29 All-America citations during their illustrious careers. In international competition, Galat was a silver medalist in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2017 FINA World Championships, while Bratton has competed at the World University Games and Pan Pacific Championships.
Additionally, former Texas A&M NCAA Champion and four-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson will seek to build on her current total of nine World Championships medals at the event.
The meet will be swam in short course meters and will span over the course of six days with preliminaries taking place each morning and semi-finals and finals in the evening session. Prelims will begin at 9:30 a.m. CST (8:30 p.m. EST), while the finals sessions will take place at 7 p.m. CST (6 a.m. EST) with the exception of Dec. 16 which will begin at 6 p.m. CST (5 a.m. EST). Hangzhou is 13 hours ahead of United States eastern time.
The top-16 swimmers in each event will move on to the semi-finals with the top-eight from the semifinals moving on to the finals. All events over 100 meters and relays will be swum as prelims and finals only.
