Texas A&M Defeats SMU, 5-2
Feb 17, 2018 | Women's Tennis
DALLAS – The Texas A&M women's tennis team got back into the win column today with a 5-2 victory over SMU at the SMU Tennis Complex indoor courts.
The Aggies improved to 8-1 to equal the program's best season start after nine matches. SMU drops to 3-4.
The doubles point was decided by a tiebreaker in the last match standing. After the A&M freshman pair of Dorthea Faa-Hviding and Riley McQuaid disposed of Nicole Petchey and Ana Perez-Lopez, 6-3, at the No. 3 line, SMU's Karina Traxler and Sarai Monarrez-Yesaki countered with a 6-2 win over A&M's Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma at No. 1.
A&M's Macarena Olivares and Iulia Ivascu had jumped out to a 5-1 lead over Tiffany Hollebeck and Anzhelika Shapovalova at No. 2, but the SMU duo raced back and fought off at least one match point before taking a 6-5 lead. A&M then tied the match to force a tiebreaker. SMU scored the first three points of the tiebreaker, but A&M answered by winning the next four points. SMU managed to tie the score at 4-4 and 5-5 before A&M won back-to-back points to win the match and give the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
In singles, SMU won the first set on three courts, including at the No. 5 line where Perez-Lopez defeated Ivascu, 6-3, 6-3, to tie the team score at 1-1. Faa-Hviding put A&M ahead, 2-1, with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Hollebeck at No. 6, and Olivares would overcome a 5-2 second-set deficit to defeat Monarrez-Yesaki, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 to put the Aggies up, 3-1. It marked Olivares' team-leading 12th consecutive victory, and she improved to 9-0 in dual matches.
McQuaid clinched the victory for A&M and also improved to 9-0 as she won the final two games in each set to pull away from Petchey, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4.
Gonzalez had her undefeated record threatened by Shapovalova at No. 1, but the Aggie rebounded from a 6-3 first-set loss and held on to a 7-5 victory in the second set to force a 10-point super tiebreaker to determine the match winner. Shapovalova had match point at 9-8, but Gonzalez, ranked 87th in the nation in singles, won the next three points to close out the match and improve to 9-0.
Traxler won her match over Paalma at No. 3 for the final 5-2 score. Paalma won the opening set, 6-2, but Traxler cruised to a 6-0 second-set win to even the match. Paalma jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the final set, but Traxler came back to tie the set at 4-4. Paalma then went up, 5-4, as Traxler double faulted, but Traxler rebounded and won the final three games to close out the match.
The Aggies conclude a three-match road swing Sunday at TCU. First serve against the Horned Frogs is at 1 p.m. at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.

Postmatch Quotes
Texas A&M Head Coach Mark Weaver
"It was a very good job today for the Aggies. It is never easy playing on the road and playing a team on their indoor courts. We definitely had a tough challenge for the day, and I thought the girls handled the adversity well today. We almost let one slip again in the doubles but we really kept our composure to get the doubles point which definitely was a key point today because we had a lot of battles out there in the singles and ultimately the girls came through. Just an A-plus effort and competed very, very hard, and now it is time to get good recuperation tonight and come out, we have a big match tomorrow against TCU."
