Mar 10, 2018 | Equestrian
COLLEGE STATION - The No. 3 Texas A&M equestrian team dropped a 13-7 decision to No. 1 Georgia, Saturday in the SEC finale at the Hildebrand Equine Complex.
"We did some really good things and had some solid rides today. There were some tiny little mistakes here and there that you just can't do against the number one team," head coach Tana McKay said. "On the flip side, it gives us motivation to work hard and have a good meet against West Texas A&M, and then roll into the SEC Championship."
The Aggies (9-5, 3-3 SEC) took an early 3-2 lead after the day's first event, Equitation over Fences. Georgia (9-1, 5-1 SEC) scored the first two points before A&M rattled off three straight points to win the event. Rhian Murphy kicked things off with an 85 to defeat Emma Mandarino's 82. Rachael Hake tallied her team-high 11th win of the season after scoring an 87, the second highest ride of the season, to outscore Sydney Hutchins, 87-80. The Washington, Mich., native also earned her second Most Outstanding Player (MOP) honor of the season for her performance. Rebekah Chenelle concluded the event by downing Ali Tritschler, 85.5-84.
In the Western arena, Georgia took the lead, 6-4, at the halfway point. Ashton Dunkel tallied the lone point in Reining with the highest scoring ride of the day by topping Julia Spreng, 72.5-71.5, while earning her first MOP of the season.
In Equitation on the Flat, the Bulldogs extended their lead after taking the event 4-1. Hake secured the sole victory for the Aggies by defeating Tritschler, 73-67.
Heading into the final event trailing 10-5, the Aggies dropped Horsemanship, 3-2. Bailey Cook earned the highest scoring ride of the day after outscoring Madison Anger, 76.5-75. Avery Ellis concluded the meet by earning her 10th victory of the season, bettering Payton Anderson, 72-46.
The Aggies return to action March 23 at the Hildebrand Equine Complex against West Texas A&M at 11 a.m. for senior day. Admission to the meet is free.
