No. 6 Texas A&M tops No. 18 Notre Dame at the Mitchell Tennis Center
Mar 15, 2018 | Men's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION – The No. 6 Texas A&M men's tennis team topped No. 18 Notre Dame Thursday evening at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station. The Aggies (11-3, 3-0 SEC) bested the Fighting Irish (10-7, 2-0 ACC) in their first match at home in over a month.
With the win Texas A&M improved their all-time record against Notre Dame to 6-4 and claimed their third ranked win this spring.
The Maroon & White claimed the doubles point to open the match for the eighth time in 12 matches this spring. No. 14 Jordi Arconada and Juan Carlos Aguilar were the first match off the court with the 6-3 win over No. 55 Brendon Kempin and Tristan McCormick on the top court. After Richard Ciammarra and Matt Gamble topped Patrick Kypson and Barnaby Smith, 6-3, on court two the Aggies needed a win from Valentin Vacherot and AJ Catanzariti on court three to secure the point. The A&M duo delivered with the 6-4 victory to give the home team the early advantage.
No. 37 Arconada wasted little time in doubling the A&M advantage, in just over an hour the senior defeated Ciammarra 6-0, 6-4 on court two to push the Aggies ahead 2-0. Arconada's doubles partner, Aguilar, wasn't far behind, the freshman ousted McCormick 6-3, 6-2 on court four to make the score 3-0 in the Aggies favor.
No. 109 Catanzariti clinched the win for the home squad, defeating Grayson Broadus 6-3, 6-4 on court six. Moments later, No. 10 Arthur Rinderknech defeated No. 33 Alex Lebedev 6-2, 6-4 on the top court to push the lead to 5-0.
The Fighting Irish claimed the final two matches of the night, Matt Gamble topped Barnaby Smith, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 on court five followed by a 2-6, 7-6(7), 1-0[3] win by Guillermo Cabrera over No. 31 Vacherot on court four, to make the final score 5-2.
Texas A&M returns to SEC play as they take on LSU (8-6, 1-3) Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (CT) at the Mitchell Tennis Center. The Aggies topped the Tigers 4-0 earlier this season in College Station at the ITA Kick Off Weekend on January 28.

On playing at home and the win…
"We are happy to be home first of all, it was the first match on our courts in over a month and a half. That part was really good and then we were able to do a good job there, securing the doubles point and staying ahead by winning a lot of first sets. I was pleased with that, you know these non-conference matches are a little tricky, as we get into conference, we got a conference match on Sunday and obviously TCU next week. Our guys have to stay in the moment and take care of these matches one at a time, but like what I said I'm happy that we are back home and I thought our guys competed hard, and I was pleased overall with how we played tonight."
On players that impressed him…
"Well Jordi Arconada has been playing lights out, he was the first guy off the court and won the doubles, he and Juan Carlos Aguilar were both really good. Arthur Rinderknech played in a pro tournament earlier today, playing five sets today shows a lot of character and I was really proud of him, the way he competed out there and played considering all the tennis he had played today and the disappointment of losing the match earlier. Then getting back here just in time for the singles matches, I was really pleased with that effort, which shows a lot of senior leadership there."
