COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M women's tennis team celebrates Senior Day on Sunday and will honor Domenica Gonzalez, Macarena Olivares and Eva Paalma as the Aggies close out their regular-season home schedule against 10th-ranked Ole Miss. First serve against the Rebels is at noon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
General admission is free, and the first 50 fans will receive a pair of free Aggie sunglasses.
"It's hard to believe that Senior Day is already upon us," said Mark Weaver, who is in his third season as head coach of the Aggies. "Eva, Domenica and Maca have all had great careers for the Aggies, and we are all looking forward to honoring them tomorrow for all their hard work and achievements. The matchup with Ole Miss is a great opportunity for us. We are playing and competing at a very high level as we are right in the middle of the SEC schedule, and we are no doubt headed in the right direction with how we are improving and performing."
Texas A&M (15-4, 5-3 SEC), alone in fifth place in the SEC standings, has won its last five matches, including a 4-1 victory over No. 25 Mississippi State on Friday that gave Weaver his 50th career victory as head coach of the Maroon and White. The match against the Bulldogs marked A&M's first of five consecutive Top 25 opponents.
Ole Miss, one-half game behind the Aggies and tied with Mississippi State for fifth in the standings, has won its last three matches and is 15-4, including 5-4 in SEC matches after defeating LSU, 4-2, on Friday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
A&M is led by senior and 119th-ranked Domenica Gonzalez, who is 14-1 in singles dual matches, all at the No. 1 line. Freshman Riley McQuaid is 12-1, having seen action at the No. 4 line, where she is 8-0, as well as the No. 5 court, and senior Macarena Olivares is 14-4 in dual matches, all at No. 2.
In doubles, the Aggies have won the point in four of the last five matches.
Arianne Hartono leads the Rebels. The senior All-American is ranked 17th in the nation in singles and No. 7 in doubles with Alexa Bortles. Hartono boasts a 23-6 record in singles, including 14-1 at the No. 1 line, where she is 7-2 in SEC matches. Tea Jandric is ranked 82nd in singles, and Sabina Machalova, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week, is No. 90.
Hartono and Bortles are 19-8 overall in doubles, including, 10-3 at the No. 1 line, as well as 4-1 in SEC contests.
A&M has never lost to the Rebels in an SEC match, having won all five meetings since the Aggies joined the league for the 2013 season. A&M, 2-0 against Ole Miss in matches played in College Station, owns a 7-1 lead in the all-time series which began in 1986.
The Aggies hit the road for their final four matches of the regular season, playing at No. 2 Vanderbilt on April 5, at No. 20 Kentucky on April 7, at No. 15 Auburn on April 13 and at Alabama on April 15. The SEC Tournament is April 18-22 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
