Men's Golf Advances to Match Play at SEC Championship
Apr 27, 2018 | Men's Golf
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – No. 2 Texas A&M turned in a round of two-under par Friday on the Seaside Course of Sea Island Golf Club, advancing to the match play portion of the 2018 SEC Men's Golf Championship.
The Aggies (296-277-278=851, +11) completed the turn-around that followed a disappointing opening round with their second consecutive showing under par, finishing in a tie for seventh place as the field was whittled down to just eight schools who advance to match play. Saturday will see two stages of match play to set the stage for two squads to battle head-to-head Sunday with the conference title on the line.
"I'm thrilled with the heart and pride these guys showed the last two days," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "You spot a field like this 16 shots and have to move up six spots on the leaderboard to keep playing, this is an amazing accomplishment. The last two days we've been as good as anybody."
Texas A&M, which stood at nine-over par at the turn on Friday, rallied with four players below par and a combined score of minus-four during their back nine. The Aggies will face 11th-ranked LSU in the SEC quarterfinals.
"Our back nine was amazing today," Higgins added. "Our guys knew what they needed to do and where they stood. I'm really proud of everybody. It was a great team effort, but Chandler, Paysse and Brandon really stepped up big coming down the stretch. Dan also gave a great round. He struggled early but battled and kept it together."
Junior All-American Chandler Phillips (75-68-67=210, E) surged up the leaderboard 16 spots Friday with a three-under round to produce his second straight scorecard below par and finish tied for 10th. It was the seventh top-10 showing in 11 events this season for the Huntsville, Texas, native.
"Chandler put us on his back the last two days with a 68 and a 67 and gave us a chance to keep playing," Higgins said.
Senior Andrew Paysse (74-69-71=214, +4) ended stroke play in a tie for 26th after finishing with birdies in three of his final five holes on the day.
Brandon Smith (73-74-70=217, +7) earned a share of 36th on the player leaderboard while rookie Walker Lee (74-68-77=219, +9) and sophomore Dan Erickson (79-72-70=221, +11), ended stroke play in ties for 46th and 52nd, respectively.
