May 24, 2018 | Men's Tennis
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 72 Valentin Vacherot of the Texas A&M men's tennis team advanced to the NCAA Singles Round of 16 to earn All-American honors with a win Thursday at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. No. 5 Patrick Kypson and the No. 3 duo of Jordi Arconada and Juan Carlos Aguilar suffered setbacks on Thursday.
Vacherot got the day started with an impressive 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 35 Lucas Poullain of Florida State. The sophomore improved to 31-12 on the year and became the third Aggie to earn All-American status in singles, joining No. 5 Patrick Kypson and No. 12 Arthur Rinderknech. The trio of singles All-Americans marks the first time in program history that the Aggies have produced more than one singles All-American in program history. The A&M sophomore will take on No. 7 Borna Gojo in the Round of 16 Thursday at 10:30 a.m. (CT).
"I played well again today and have a lot of confidence in my shots," Vacherot said. "My serve was the key to the match again as I only lost serve one time. It's nice to know that I am an All-American to go along with Patrick, Arthur [Rinderknech], Jordi and Carlos to go along with AJ [Catanzariti] last year it really shows how good and deep our team really was this season."
Kypson saw his season come to an end, the ITA Rookie of the Year fell 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 to No. 47 Runhao Hua of Michigan. Kypson finished his first season 17-10 overall with a team and SEC-best 14 wins over ranked opponents this spring. The Raleigh, N.C. native earned All-American honors after earning a national seed to the NCAA Singles Championship.
Arconada and Aguilar dropped a third-set super tiebreaker to No. 43 Jack Lin and William Matheson of Columbia, falling 6-0, 1-6, 11-9. The Maroon & White duo finished the season with a 20-9 record overall, including a 12-6 mark against ranked pairs. The
