COLLEGE STATION -- Texas A&M senior linebacker Riley Garner was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, it was announced Thursday.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually at the All Sports Association's Awards Banquet in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Garner, a marketing major in the Mays Business School, holds a 3.583 GPA and has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll the last three years. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee representative for football has traveled to Haiti twice with Mission of Hope and has volunteered to encourage reading to students at four elementary schools in the Bryan-College Station area.
The College Station native has participated in the Big Event three times and has served as a camp counselor for the special needs camp, Camp Blessings Texas. Garner was named the 2018 Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Character Award recipient, and was a volunteer huddle leader at Texas A&M's FCA Sports Camp three times.
A special teams ace, Garner has been a mainstay on the punt and kickoff coverage units for the last three seasons.
Former Texas A&M quarterback Trevor Knight won the award in 2016.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 1 and finalists will be announced on November 19.
The formal announcement of the 2018 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation's press conference in New York City on December 4. The presentation of the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 50th All Sports Association Awards Banquet on February 15, 2019 in Fort Walton Beach.
