POSITION OUTLOOK: Running Backs
Aug 24, 2018 | Football
AUGUST OUTLOOK
The running back position is an interesting spot for the Aggies. There's definitely a headliner, as Trayveon Williams could finish at or near the top of the school's career charts. There's All-SEC talk surrounding him. Behind the junior, there's options. Who will get the bulk of the carries after Williams?
THE LEADER
Williams is the entire package, a reliable leader and a real talent. He can break at any time, that's been proven in the past.
He's climbing the A&M charts as far as rush yards. If he managed 1,200 yards this season, he'd get to the elite 3,000 career yards club. Then could have another year to continue the ascension.
The Aggies will be more downhill and physical in the run game under Jimbo Fisher. Williams has exploded thus far at A&M, now can he grind out those hard yards required to keep the chains moving?
COLTS IN THE STABLE
There are four freshmen running backs who could play early. And, not just play, but impress.
Vernon Jackson, Jashaun Corbin, Deneric Prince and Charles Strong will be in the mix. There's some big bodies that can move among the youngsters. Most don't look like freshmen.
New redshirt rules are in place. Freshmen can play up to four games, and still not lose a season of eligibility. It will create an interesting dynamic with these four. Jimbo Fisher could find a combination that allows these newcomers to provide depth for most, or all, of the season.
12 MEN ON THE FIELD
The Aggies won't actually play with twelve men on offense, but the 12th Man is actually on that side of the ball.
Cullen Gallaspia, long a key cog on special teams, is now a fullback. Not only is he new to the position, but the position itself is new to these players. A fullback was not part of the scheme in the Kevin Sumlin era.
Gallaspia has never played on the offensive side, not even in high school. He probably has more to learn through this coaching change than anyone.
But, he's been all in with the move. He carries a bigger body, but moves well in it. His hands get better every day, and were probably better than most thought to begin with.
It sets up for a possibly magical moment. What will the 12th Man in the stands do, if the 12th Man on the field steps into the end zone for a touchdown?
