Aggies Register Third Straight Shutout, Top BYU 2-0
Aug 24, 2018 | Soccer
The Aggies started the season with three consecutive shutouts for the first time since 2006. On Sunday, the Maroon & White will look to start the year with four shutouts for the first time in school history.
The key to the Aggies' victory was closing out each half. In the first half, the Maroon & White broke the scoring seal when Jimena Lopez scored with 4:00 left until the intermission. Texas A&M (3-0-0) sealed the deal with Ally Watt notching her third goal of the year with 3:33 remaining in the match.
Cosette Morché, who entered the match ranked 21st among active players in career shutouts, booked her third clean sheet of the season and her 17th as a collegian. She made five saves in the match and won the ball in the air on multiple corner kicks to fight off the Cougars.
In a 90-minute mêlée, BYU held the advantage in shots (19-15), shots-on-goal (5-4) and corner kicks (8-3).
With the win, Texas A&M improved to 22-3-1 all-time in home openers.
GOAL SUMMARY
41' – Rheagen Smith ran the cone drill through two defenders to enter the top of penalty box right of the arc. She ripped a shot from 15 yards out that glanced off a defender, sending a carom to Lopez who scored with a left-footer inside the left post from three yards out. A&M 1, BYU 0.
87' – Cienna Arrieta dumped a ball into Watt, with her back to goal, near the left corner of the penalty box. Watt used two touches to clear the defender and lofted a howitzer that found a sliver between the crossbar and the keeper's right mitt. A&M 2, BYU 0.

TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach G Guerrieri
On game tonight…
"For the longest time I was like, 'This as good of 1-0 game as you are ever going to find.' It was a terrific crowd and it is great for the Class of '22 to start off with a win. They are undefeated. They have never lost a game that they have gone to at A&M."
On Jimena Lopez being back from France…
"She has been back since Tuesday. The first practice on Tuesday we almost couldn't get started because she was hugging everybody. For her to be able to step back on the field is great. It brings confidence and a degree of international sophistication on the field."
On Rheagen [Smith] setting up goal for Jimena [Lopez]…
"For Rheagen to beat those two players to get in the box and then to hit a screamer across the goal was awesome. Then it was just pure desire by Jimena to get on the end of it and push it in on her non-dominant foot."
On the goalkeeper, Cosette Morche…
"She didn't bobble anything, and she boxed when she had to box. When you have a goalkeeper that plays like that, the rest of the defense plays better. She is one of the special goalkeepers in the United States. She has only improved, only gotten more athletic, stronger, leaner, and quicker in the year and half she's been here. When you have a goalkeeper playing at that level, it just brings so much confidence to the rest of the team in front of them. She made some really, really key stops for us that allowed our team to breathe and to get out."
Sophomore defender Jimena Lopez
On her first game back from U20 Women's World Cup…
"I'm really happy to be back. I'm happy about the trust the coaches gave me by putting me on the field. I'm happy to serve the team and score today."
On her scoring play…
"I have all the trust in the world in Rheagen {Smith}. She's been doing great. She's confident and she has a great skill. I just had a feeling that ball was coming to me and it did."
