COLLEGE STATION – Camila Gomez, a decorated libero with extensive international experience, has signed to play volleyball at Texas A&M, Aggie head coach Laura "Bird" Kuhn announced today.
"We are so excited to have Camila here in Aggieland with us," Kuhn said. "Her volleyball IQ and level of experience will have an instant impact on our team. Camila has competed at the highest level with the Colombian National Team, as well as playing the last two years for one of the top junior college programs in the country, Miami Dade. Throughout the recruiting process we could sense her drive and determination to reach her goals. Those kind of intangible characteristics are contagious within a team. We cannot wait to get her in the gym!"
Gomez, from Cali, Colombia, has competed for a Colombia National Team each of the last seven years. Most recently she helped lead Colombia to a gold medal at the 2018 South American Games after having won a silver medal at the 2017 competition in which she was named best libero. She also won a silver medal with the team in the 2015 tournament.
Gomez first collected best libero laurels at the 2010 Junior South American Championship. She also received the honor at both the 2014 and 2016 U22 South American Championship and was awarded Best Receiver at the 2013 Junior Pan-American Cup. At the 2013 Copa Latina, she nearly swept the tournament honors as she was awarded Most Valuable Player, Best Libero, Best Digger and Best Receiver. At the 2014 U23 Pan-American Cup, she captured all three defensive awards as she was named Best Libero, Best Digger and Best Receiver after leading Colombia to a silver medal.
Gomez played the last two seasons at Miami Dade College and led the Lady Sharks to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championships, earning NJCAA Volleyball National All-Tournament team honors as a sophomore. Miami Dade also won the state championship in each of Gomez's two years with the Lady Sharks.
Texas A&M (4-2) plays its season home opener on Thursday as the Aggies play host to the Pepperdine Waves at 7 p.m. at Reed Arena on the first day of the Texas A&M Invitational. The Aggies also will face Nicholls on Friday at 10 a.m. and close out the tournament against Missouri State at 7 p.m. on Friday.
