LOS ANGELES – Barnaby Smith and Noah Schachter of the No. 9 Texas A&M men's tennis team advanced to the doubles semifinals at the 2019 Sherwood Collegiate Cup presented by the Sherwood Country Club in Los Angeles. Joining the Aggies at the tournament will be student-athletes from No. 7 UCLA and No. 10 Stanford.
The impressive field at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup includes six ranked singles players and is scheduled to run through Monday. Additionally, the Aggies will take on Abilene Christian Sunday at 8 p.m.
Smith and Schachter topped Mathew Tsolakyan and Eric Hahan of UCLA in the first round before ousting the third-seeded duo of Keegan Smith and Bryce Pereira of UCLA. The A&M pair will take on the No. 2 seed of Axel Geller and Alex Rotsaert from Stanford on Sunday for a place in the finals.
Texas A&M represents three of the four semifinalists in the singles consolation draw. Freshman Alex Vedri topped Pereira 6-3, 7-5 before outlasting Kento Perera of Stanford 7-6(5), 7-6(8) to reach the semifinals. Vedri will oppose No 89 Carlos Aguilar in the first semifinal, Aguilar reached the semifinals after defeating Tomas Kopsczynski of Stanford and Timothy Sah of Stanford. Junior Valentin Vacherot will take on No. 101 Will Genesen of Stanford in the opposite semifinal match. Vacherot topped Max Wild of UCLA in the round of 16 before topping No. 29 Sameer Kumar of Stanford in the quarterfinals.
The Maroon & White duo of Pranav Kumar and Abbrat advanced to the consolation doubles draw after topping Mathew Tsolakyan and Eric Hahn of UCLA.
Freshman Austin Abbrat picked up the first ranked win of his collegiate career, topping No. 29 Kumar in the main draw first round before falling in the second round to Connor Hance of UCLA. Guido Marson also claimed his first ranked win, the freshman bested No. 101 Genesen of Stanford before falling to teammate Hady Habib in the second round. Habib reached the quarterfinals of the main draw, falling to Keegan Smith of UCLA.
