LOS ANGELES – No. 9 Texas A&M men's tennis took a break from participation in the 2019 Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Los Angeles to take on Abilene Christian at the Burbank Tennis Center. The Aggies bested the Wildcats, 7-0, to win their first dual match of the spring season.
Texas A&M picked up the doubles point to open the match after Valentin Vacherot and Jack Pulliam picked up a 6-1 win on court three followed by Barnaby Smith and Noah Schachter's 6-4 win on court two.
No. 50 Smith tacked on the match's second point with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Jonathan Sheehy on court two. Freshman Jack Pulliam picked up his first collegiate dual win to push the A&M advantage to 3-0, Pulliam bested Sebastian Langson on court six, 6-4, 6-2. Pulliam's classmate, Austin Abbrat, clinched the Maroon & White win on court four. Abbratt topped Dimitris Azoides 7-5, 6-2 to earn his first clinch win of his collegiate career.
The Aggies claimed the final three matches to complete the sweep. Freshman Alex Vedri defeated Riley Tran 7-6(6), 6-3 followed by No. 89 Carlos Aguilar's 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over Josh Sheehy. Freshman Noah Schachter picked up the final win of the day, Schachter bested Nikolas Moceanu 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 on court three.
The Aggies make their first appearance at home next Saturday at the George P Mitchell Tennis Center. In addition to hosting the ITA Kick Off Weekend the Maroon & White will take on UTRGV at 9 a.m. Texas A&M will take on Western Michigan in the first round of the ITA Kick Off while Cal and Virginia are scheduled for the other half off the draw. Saturday's winners will face off on Sunday vying for a place in the ITA National Team Indoors in Chicago on February 15-18.
