Lihu'e, Kaua'i -- The Texas A&M men's golf team moved into third after the second day of play at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course. The Aggies, shooting 12-under 564 as a team, were challenged throughout the 18-hole day by Arizona State and will look to turn the tables on the Sun Devils in the third round Saturday afternoon to make a push for the championship.Â
"Chandler Phillips played a really nice round today. He had two bad shots that led him to bogeys and then the rest of the round was just fantastic, he really had a lot of opportunities go really well,' said head coach J.T. Higgins. "Everyone else was just pretty mediocre. We are a team that is way too concerned with how it looks and how we're hitting it, and not with competing and putting a good score on the board. We've been frustrated by bad shots that lead to us making on-course corrections, instead of just playing the game. We have one day left and we're looking to come out and compete tomorrow, play with a lot of pride and make a little run at this."
Senior Chandler Phillips saw the most improvement for the Aggies, moving up 18 spots to be tied for 13th after a strong day of play as he tallied six birdies to shoot 4-under (72-68). Sophomore Walker Lee remains as A&M's leader through day two. He's tied for 10th at 5-under par (67-72). Junior Brandon Smith rounds out the top three for the Aggies as he is currently tied for 19th, shooting 3-under (69-72).
A&M will look to finish strong in Hawai'i as play resumes Saturday, Feb. 23 at 12 p.m. CT. Follow along here.
