Doxakis Stymies No. 18 Baylor to Start Shriners Classic

HOUSTON, Texas – John Doxakis continued his dominance on the mound and the Aggies crafted a four-run fourth inning as Texas A&M registered a 5-2 victory over the No. 18 Baylor Bears Friday evening to open the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic Friday at Minute Maid Park.

HOUSTON, TexasJohn Doxakis continued his dominance on the mound and the Aggies crafted a four-run fourth inning as Texas A&M registered a 5-2 victory over the No. 18 Baylor Bears Friday evening to open the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic Friday at Minute Maid Park.
 
Doxakis (3-0) yielded just one run on four hits while striking out 12 in 8.0 innings. The dozen strikeouts tied a career-high for the junior southpaw as he record double-digits in the K column for the fourth time in his last five outings.
 
Kasey Kalich worked the ninth inning, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three.
 
The Maroon & White made the most of home runs by Bryce Blaum and Braden Shewmake. Blaum's first-pitch dinger to lead off the first inning knotted the game at 1-1 and Shewmake's two-run tater gave A&M a 3-1 edge in the fourth.
 
Texas A&M improved to 9-2 with the win. The loss was the first of the year for Baylor as the Bears moved to 8-1.
 
UP NEXT
The Aggies return to action Saturday when they face the TCU Horned Frogs in a 7 p.m. contest at Minute Maid Park.

T1| Richard Cunningham dropped a leadoff double in front of diving centerfielder Zach DeLoach to start the frame. With one out, Cunningham moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by Davis Wendzel. BU 1, A&M 0.
 
T2| Blaum deposited the first pitch he saw into the Crawford Boxes in leftfield for a leadoff dinger. A&M 1, BU 1.
 
B4| Logan Foster threaded a single through the left side of the infield to start the inning and two pitches later Shewmake. Will Frizzell and Mikey Hoehner were each issued a base on balls and Cam Blake bunted the pair into scoring position. Frizzell came home to score on a grounder by Ty Coleman and Hoehner crossed the plate on a single to rightfield by Aaron Walters. A&M 5, BU 1.
 
T9| With Kalich on to work, Kyle Harper singled to rightfield and moved to second on a wild pitch. Cunningham was hit by a pitch. With one out, Wendzel flared a single into shallow centerfield to score Harper. Kalich struck out the last two batters to end the game. A&M 5, BU 2.
