PALM CITY, Fla. -- The Texas A&M men's golf team is tied for sixth after the opening round at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational. The Aggies shot even par in the first round of play Sunday afternoon at the Floridian National Golf Club.Â
"I'm really proud of the guys, they had a really gutsy performance today," said head coach J.T. Higgins. We got out to a slow start, but they did a good job battling and staying in it. The weather really turned and there were some gusty winds and colder temperatures at the end of the day, but we actually played our best golf in that. I thought we did a much better job of sticking to our game plan today, keeping the ball in play off the tee. We didn't convert that well on our scoring opportunities, but if we keep giving ourselves those chances, putts will start dropping and we could have a really good tournament.
"Chandler Phillips was amazing, he made seven birdies and two bogies today against one of the best players in the country. Overall, we worked hard today and had a good team effort. We want to see some more of that tomorrow, we need all five guys in it to have a chance to compete and move up the board."
Senior Chandler Phillips leads the Aggies so far as he is tied for second, shooting 5-under through the first 18 holes. Freshman Sam Bennett is tied for 23rd after day one, shooting even par.Â
The Aggies are back in action on Monday morning as tee time is set for 7:30 a.m. CT. For updates and results, follow here.
