COLLEGE STATION – Performances during Texas A&M's first week of the outdoor track and field season resulted in three Aggies earning SEC weekly honors from the conference office on Tuesday.
Â
Jace Comick was named men's SEC Runner of the Week, Nick Mirabelli claimed the men's SEC Field Athlete of the Week and Tyra Gittens received the women's SEC Field Athlete of the Week.
Â
Comick won the 100m and 200m races at the Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted by Arizona State and produced the collegiate leading time outdoors in the 200m with a career best of 20.75 seconds. His time of 10.44 in the 100m was just off his career best of 10.33 while he lowered his previous best of 20.93 in the 200m. Both winning efforts were run into a head wind.
Â
Aggie freshman Mirabelli registered a career best in the javelin during his debut in an Aggie uniform, winning the event with a mark of 234 feet, 2 inches (71.37) to lead a Texas A&M 1-2-3 sweep. Entering the meet with a high school best of 227-10, Mirabelli bettered that mark five times in his series of six throws.
Â
Completing the victory with his best effort on the final throw, Mirabelli ranks No. 10 on the Aggie all-time list. His mark ranks second best among collegians for the 2019 season and he is currently the top freshman. Among marks for under 20-year-old athletes, Mirabelli is the American leader this season and seventh among the world junior list.
Â
After missing the indoor season, Gittens opened her sophomore campaign with a 5-11 ½ (1.81) winning effort in the high jump. She currently shares the Division I collegiate lead with North Carolina's Nicole Greene. Having no misses through a 5-7 clearance, Gittens made the next three heights – 5-8 ¾, 5-10 and 5-11 ¼ – on two attempts before registering three misses at 6-0 ¼ (1.84).
