SADDLEBROOKE, Ariz. – Texas A&M women's golf posted its best round since September, shooting a 2-under 286 in the second round of the MountainView Collegiate at The Preserve Golf Club. All five Aggie golfers shot 73-or-better on Saturday.
"Our team is playing some great golf, and we feel as if we're so close to breaking through with a really low round," said head coach Andrea Gaston. "We got off to a great start today, where each of our players started with several birdies. We will need to just keep playing one shot at a time, and take advantage of some of the birdie holes tomorrow. If we can gain some momentum, we can finish strong."
Through five holes, Texas A&M had 11 birdies, and was at one point within a stroke for the team lead. The Aggies finished the second round at 2-under for the tournament, 11 strokes behind leader Texas State but only two strokes out of fourth place.
Texas A&M sophomore Ava Schwienteck matched her career-best at 3-under par, taking 69 strokes to traverse the par 72 / 6,218-yard course in the western foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains. She is tied for 31st at 2-over for the event.
Sophomore Amber Park signed an under-par scorecard for the second consecutive day with a 1-under 71. Park, at 4-under, trails leader Polly Mack of UNLV by three strokes. Freshman Brooke Tyree shot an even-par 72, and is in the tie for 17th at 1-under par.
Junior Courtney Dow and freshman Katie Finley are tied for 38th, each shooting a 1-over 73 to move to 3-over after the second round.
The final round tees off in a shotgun start at 10 a.m. CT on Sunday.
