SADDLEBROOKE, Ariz. – Texas A&M's Ava Schwienteck fired a 6-under 66, the best round by a Texas A&M women's golfer in over two seasons, to lead the team to its third straight top-five finish Sunday in the final round of the MountainView Collegiate.
"It felt great to put up a low score today," said Schwienteck. "My ball-striking was good all week, and I gave myself a lot of opportunities to make birdies. I've been working really hard on my game, and it's great to see it start paying off."
Schwienteck had only one bogey on The Preserve Golf Club, placing a season-best ninth with a 4-under 212, improving her score in each round of the tournament. A&M's Amber Park notched her fourth top-10 finish of the season, shooting a final-round 73 to finish at 3-under 213, tied for 10th.
"I was happy to see two of our players finish in the top 10," said head coach Andrea Gaston. "I feel like we are getting closer to shooting some great team scores. We are gaining momentum and confidence with each tournament—we just need to minimize our mistakes."
The Aggies shot a 3-under 285 on Sunday, shooting par-or-better each day of the event to finish at 5-under 859, the team's best 54-hole score since September. Texas A&M finished in fifth place, as Iowa State won the event at 28-under par.
Freshman Brooke Tyree navigated the 54-hole tournament at even par 216, turning in a 1-over 73 Sunday. Tyree picked up her second top-25 finish of the season, tying for 21st, and matched her career-best 54-hole score.
Courtney Dow carded a 1-over 73 on the par 72 / 6,218-yard course in the western foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, tying for 39th at 4-over 220. Katie Finley tied for 52nd at 8-over 224 after a 5-over 77 in Sunday's round.
