COLLEGE STATION – Renee McBryde of Texas A&M women's tennis was named the SEC Freshman of the Week by the league office Wednesday.
"Renee [McBryde] continues to improve and each and every day,' Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "She basically missed the entire fall season with an injury and had to miss several months of practice. Her accomplishments this spring really speak to the caliber of player that she is. Her work ethic and desire to get better have been admirable to our team."
McBryde, a Wollongong, Australia native, clinched A&M's win at Missouri last Friday and won a must-win match at Arkansas on Sunday when the Aggies trailed 2-3 with two matches still on the court. The right-hander posted a 7-5, 6-1 win against Ellie Wright of Missouri to claim her 10th dual victory of the spring.
Against Arkansas, McBryde partnered with classmate Katya Townsend to earn the first doubles win of the day and help the Aggies secure the doubles point for the fourth straight match. She finished the week with a do-or-die win over Lauren Alter of Arkansas, winning in three-sets to keep the Aggies alive and set up teammate Tatiana Makarova's last-match standing victory.
In their last four matches, the Aggies have defeated No. 4 Vanderbilt, then-No. 21 Kentucky, Missouri and Arkansas. The Aggies are tied with Vanderbilt for third place in the SEC standings with a match-up looming against No. 4 and second-place South Carolina set for Friday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
Kentucky's Justina Mikulskyte was named SEC Player of the Week.
