COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M's Rhian Murphy was named to the SEC Equestrian Community Service Team, the conference office announced Thursday.
Â
Murphy, a Charlotte, Vt., native, volunteers alongside her teammates at the Brazos Valley Food Bank, where she has begun participating in a new event called Produce Packers.
Â
The sophomore is involved in the Aggies CAN Food Drive, the largest student-athlete ran canned food drive in the nation. Texas A&M student-athletes collect canned good donations at home athletic events, benefiting the Brazos Valley Food Bank & The 12th Can, in an effort to give back to the community that gave so much to them.
Â
The Sport Management major has volunteered her time at Sports Fest, an event hosted to allow children from the Bryan/College Station area the chance to play sports with their favorite college athletes in an effort to promote a healthy lifestyle at a young age.
Â
Among her many other contributions to the community, Murphy reads to students in Snook, Texas as a part of the Aggies READ campaign.
Â
The SEC highlights student-athletes from around the league in a continuing effort to recognize the accomplishments of student-athletes beyond the field of competition each season with a Community Service Team.
Â
All 21 league-sponsored sports have had a Community Service Team since 2004, with at-large teams for men's and women's sports being chosen from 1999-2003. The SEC began this concept with a football Community Service Team in 1994.
